THE COURSE

             Practical Nursing is a one –year program of study that includes lecture, laboratory and supervised clinical practice. This program is designed to provide the knowledge, skills and attitude needed for entering a challenging nursing career. The curriculum used meets the requirements and demands of  US and Canada academic standards that will qualify graduates to take National Council Licensure Examination  for Practical  Nurses (NCLEX-PN).

COURSE OBJECTIVES :

  • Utilize the nursing process  effectively as a guide  to the  care of  culturally diverse clients.
  • Develop critical thinking to provide highest level of nursing care from assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating individualized client care.
  • Perform basic nursing functions safely and effectively with competence, relevant to the needs of a client.
  • Recognize and respect different cultures, beliefs and values of a client.
  • Administer medication safely and accurately through the knowledge of drug  calculation and classification, effects, interactions, contraindications and adverse reactions.
  • Utilize ethical principles , professional values and standards as a guide in implementing nursing care.
  • Communicate effectively using interpersonal skills with clients and other members of the health team in the workplace.
  • Be prepared to take  the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) licensure examination.

 

WHAT IS A  LICENSED PRACTICAL  NURSE

 

A Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) or licensed vocational nurses (LVNs)  works under the supervision of  the registered nurse and is responsible for giving direct and indirect patient care. The LPN is  responsible to the Charge Nurse, Clinical coordinator and/ or Supervisor for the quality of nursing care given to the patient.

 

DUTIES OF LPN :

  • Take vital signs such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse & respiration
  • Prepare and give intramuscular injections
  • Monitor catheters and give enemas
  • Apply dressings and treat bedsores
  • Monitor and report adverse reactions to medications given to the client
